Hybrids top the list of the most repaired vehicles in Europe

Most repaired car in the UK

Autodata, the world’s leading platform providing mechanics with technical and real-time information for over 43,500 models worldwide, has today published its data on the EV and hybrid vehicle models that have had the most repair searches in Europe over 12 months.

The analysis, based on data from the Autodata platform used by automotive technicians, offers valuable insight into which vehicles encounter the most mechanical problems, enabling motorists to make informed decisions when purchasing their hybrid or EV vehicles.

In the UK, the Mitsubishi Outlander and Toyota Yarris come out on top

The dominance of Toyota hybrid models, which occupy three of the top 10 places in the ranking of most-repaired vehicles, is quite clear. The lower price point of Toyota hybrid models makes them accessible to a wide audience. Top 10 list includes:

  • Mitsubishi Outlander

  • Toyota Yaris

  • Toyota C-HR

  • Toyota Corolla

  • Ford Puma

  • Fiat 500/500C

  • Kia Niro

  • Mercedes-Benz C Class

  • Hyundai Ioniq

  • Toyota Auris

In the electric vehicle segment, the Nissan Leaf is the undisputed leader, with over 20,164 searches carried out by UK garages. The Nissan Leaf is the world’s first mass market electric vehicle. Unveiled in 2010, its affordable price and sufficient range contribute to its popularity with UK motorists. The Renault Zoe, Tesla Model 3, Kia e-Niro and the Jaguar I-Pace complete the top 5 most-repaired electric models. Top 10 models include:

  • Nissan Leaf

  • Renault Zoe

  • Tesla Model 3

  • Kia e-Niro

  • Jaguar I-Pace

  • Open/Vauxhall Corsa F

  • Hyundai Kona

  • Peugeot e-2008

  • BMW i3

  •   Audi e-tron

"The UK stands at a crossroads in its automotive journey," says James Lett, Senior Technical Editor at Autodata. "The shift to electric and hybrid vehicles presents a fantastic opportunity for car technicians to learn new skills - but lack of financial means threatens to stall this progress. Shutting down and handling high-voltage batteries safely requires specialist training and equipment and there is no government investment to change that. Not only does this mean garages are losing money by turning down business, EV and hybrid drivers can’t access the services they need to safely be on the road.”

Similar trends across Europe

Analysis of Autodata data reveals similar trends across Europe. Among electric vehicles, the Renault Zoé has the highest repair searches in France, Spain and Germany. It comes second in Italy.

The Tesla Model 3 and the Fiat 500/500C also feature prominently in the five-country rankings, particularly in France and Italy for the Fiat. The popularity of these two models is explained by their appeal to motorists wishing to make the transition to electric vehicles.

As for hybrids, the Toyota brand also features prominently in the overall rankings. The Toyota Yaris hybrid dominates as the hybrid vehicle requiring the most repairs in four countries (France, UK, Germany and Italy).

The Yaris Hybrid's strong presence in the rankings can be explained by its wide distribution in the European market, thanks to its reliability, fuel efficiency and attractive price.

Lett finishes, “Despite the EV market slightly stalling, drivers are still keen to purchase EVs and hybrid cars, but there is a European-wide issue in repairing these vehicles.

“In the UK, we need more Government support to ensure garages stay equipped to service the EV market so climate conscious drivers can stay on the roads. We urge the government to work alongside the industry to bridge this gap and unlock the full potential of the electric revolution."
