Until now, if an electric vehicle such as the Opel Mokka or Peugeot 208e experienced issues with the electric motor, reduction gearbox, or peripheral power electronics components, the only option was an expensive replacement of the complete E-Axle. Now, thanks to Schaeffler Vehicle Lifetime Solutions (VLS), the need for a full E-Axle replacement is a thing of the past, as the global motion company has introduced the Schaeffler E-Axle RepSystem-M, the Schaeffler E-Axle RepSystem-G, and the Schaeffler Vitesco E-Axle PEU KIT. Schaeffler distribution partners and workshops now have access to repair solutions for all EMR3 axle applications, which can be found on many Stellantis vehicles.

E-Axle repairs: now available for Stellantis vehicles

The newly launched Schaeffler RepSystem-G and RepSystem-M Stellantis repair solutions enable workshops to repair the EMR3 axle gearbox unit and electric motor. The KITs contain original equipment quality bearings and seals specifically designed for this application, as well as detailed and easy-to-understand repair instructions. To provide extra support to forward-thinking workshops, Schaeffler has developed an E-Axle Repair Tool (E-ART), which has been designed so technicians can carry out the contact-free separation and reassembly of the rotor and stator. Workshops now have access to a tool, via a network of dedicated Schaeffler e-mobility partners, which allows them to repair E-Axle motors with minimal physical effort and without having to work against the immensely strong magnetic forces of the rotor. The tool also helps to prevent any damage occurring during the repair process.

“The workshop can get everything they need from a single source: all the components for the repair, specific instructions developed by REPXPERT engineers, plus the optimal tool for safe installation,” explained Stephan Niese, the Director of Global Product Management for E-Mobility at Schaeffler.

New: a power electronics solution

Completely new and unique to the aftermarket is the Schaeffler Vitesco E-Axle PEU KIT, which will be available from the end of February. PEU stands for Power Electronics Unit, which is responsible for converting and controlling electrical energy.

“Failures of the PEU are caused by damage to supply lines or connecting parts – such as that caused by animal bites,” says Niese. “Up until now, there have been no repair solutions available for this type of damage on the EMR3 axle.

Previously, a damaged coolant hose could lead to the replacement of the entire E-Axle. With Schaeffler’s new kits, workshops can now carry out simple PEU related repairs themselves.”

The first of the two available Schaeffler Vitesco E-Axle PEU KITs contains, among other things, a hose connector and clamps for repairing the cooling circuit. The other KIT includes the shielding plate, screws, signal wiring harness, and a sealing element, so any damaged components can be replaced. As with Schaeffler’s E-Axle RepSystem repair solutions, these kits also come with detailed repair instructions that include all essential information required for OE-level installation – including bolt tightening sequence and torque specifications.

All core EMR3 axle modules covered

With the Schaeffler E-Axle RepSystem-M and G, as well as the Schaeffler Vitesco E-Axle PEU KIT, Schaeffler VLS now offers repair solutions for all three core EMR3 axle modules: motor, gearbox, and power electronics, and these new solutions are arriving at exactly the right time: “The EMR3 has been fitted to Stellantis vehicles since 2019, and these earlier vehicles are now mostly out of warranty and increasingly appearing in independent workshops. With our solutions, professional technicians can now repair defective E-Axles instead of replacing them completely,” says Niese.
