Britain’s pothole problem is hitting tradespeople where it hurts

Potholes disrupt van users and tradespeople across the UK by causing lost time, money, and work.

The latest Great British Pothole Poll from Select Car Leasing suggests the problem is getting worse. Despite billions being spent on road maintenance, 58% of motorists say road quality has deteriorated over the past 12 months and 80% believe local councils are too slow to fix potholes.

With almost a third (32%) of drivers having suffered from pothole-related vehicle damage in the past year, van users are especially at risk. Unlike private drivers, tradespeople often cover hundreds of miles a week, travelling between jobs, sites, and suppliers.

Flat tyres are the most common issue, reported by 43% of drivers. A puncture or blowout can lead to delayed jobs and lost income.

More serious issues, like wheel alignment (27%) and suspension damage (22%), are also common. For vans that carry heavy tools, equipment and materials, these faults can worsen if left unchecked.

While the broader issue ultimately requires long-term road investment, van users can take practical steps to reduce the impact of potholes:

  • Check what roadside assistance your breakdown service or leasing provider offers

  • Check tyre pressure regularly  

  • Inspect wheels and suspension after hitting a pothole  

  • Address alignment issues early to avoid further wear  

  • Maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front gives you time to spot and avoid potholes

  • Keep photographic evidence if damage occurs  

  • Report potholes to local councils
