Cataclean highlights implications of proposed in-use emissions regulations

Proposed changes to in-use vehicle emissions regulations could mark an important step towards tackling emissions tampering

Proposed changes to in-use vehicle emissions regulations could mark an important step towards tackling emissions tampering and improving the environmental performance of the UK vehicle parc. As the Department for Transport consults on measures to strengthen emissions controls, the proposals highlight the importance of effective vehicle maintenance and ensuring emissions control systems continue to function as intended.

A key concern is the removal or disabling of vehicle emissions control systems, which can undermine their ability to manage harmful emissions. The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) is calling for stronger measures to tackle emissions tampering, alongside more effective ways to identify vehicles that no longer meet emissions requirements.

The Federation states that tackling emissions tampering is an important step towards improving the environmental performance of vehicles already on our roads. Any changes must be supported by effective, consistent testing that can identify vehicles with compromised emissions control systems, alongside practical measures that help the aftermarket restore vehicles to the required standards.

Independent garages also have an important role in helping motorists maintain their vehicles, identify potential issues and carry out appropriate servicing and repairs. As attention on in-use emissions grows, effective maintenance remains key to keeping vehicles operating as intended.

Maddie Bamber, Key Account Manager at Cataclean, commented: “The discussion around in-use vehicle emissions highlights the importance of looking after the vehicles already on our roads, as well as addressing emissions tampering.”
