Digital divide puts independent garages at risk of losing work, GSO warns
Workshops across the UK and Ireland are increasingly matching main dealer capability, but many are struggling to translate that expertise into online demand, exposing a growing divide between generic web providers and specialist digital expertise for independent garages.
Garage Services Online (GSO), which supports more than 800 independent garages, is warning that basic digital presence is no longer enough for workshops looking to compete effectively in an increasingly digital aftermarket.
A recent digital audit in Greater Manchester highlighted the disparity. Guide Bridge MOT, using a GSO-built website with dedicated pages for manufacturer-specific servicing, ranks for 571 high-intent Google searches. By comparison, a local competitor with a generic website ranks for just 31.
The difference equates to £331 a month in estimated organic search value (estimation based on monthly click budget, which can vary substantially across geographic areas), highlighting the commercial advantage of building a website around the specific work a garage wants to attract.
“A garage website needs to do far more than simply look professional. It acts as the central hub for a garage’s online presence, helping to attract the right enquiries and convert them into profitable work.” said Jim Lang, Managing Director at Garage Services Online.
“Our aim has always been to level the playing field between independent garages and main dealers. By focusing on the specific services and repair work that deliver the greatest value, we can help garages attract the right customers rather than competing for work purely on price.”
