Drivers urged to carry out simple checks before heading out on UK roads
With hundreds of thousands of breakdowns recorded on UK roads each year (282,949 in 20241), drivers are increasingly finding themselves stranded in unexpected (and sometimes unbelievable) situations.
From being stranded at the side of the road, to managing meltdowns, new research reveals the most bizarre breakdown scenarios faced by drivers.
The findings from LKQ Euro Car Parts uncovered some of the most unusual and unexpected situations UK drivers have found themselves in after breaking down.
Molly (28), from Derby, comments: “When I was at university, I worked at the student union and was in charge of leading a day trip to Liverpool for a bunch of other students. We went in a minibus, and it broke down on the way back.”
“As a student myself, was in charge and had to update the whole group while we waited to be rescued. I had to coax a few other students out of meltdowns on the side of the motorway, while trying to arrange alternative transport home.”
Working closely with drivers and garages across the UK, LKQ Euro Car Parts see first-hand the most common causes of vehicle failure and why our cars break down across the UK. As a result experts at at LKQ Euro Car Parts, have outlined the five essential pre-journey checks every driver should complete before a long journey.
Check the health and condition of your tyres
“47.6% of all breakdowns on UK motorways are a result of a tyre issues2, so maintaining your tyres is crucial before setting off on a long journey. First, check that the tread depth is within the legal limit of 1.6mm, and replace any that doesn’t meet these criteria. Always make sure you check your tyre pressure and top up any that are under inflated.”
Monitor and top up your fluids
“Ahead of long journeys, you should always check and top up your oil, brake fluid and engine coolant. All three are essential to the running of your vehicle and can be checked quickly and easily under the bonnet.”
“For most modern cars, you’ll be notified when these fluids are low, but ahead of long journeys it’s worth checking to avoid the dashboard light coming on whilst you’re driving.”
Check and replace your bulbs
“It’s important that your lights are in working order, especially if you plan to drive at night. This includes your: headlights, brake lights, fog lights, and indicators. To test, start your car and turn on each light while someone walks around the vehicle to check that the correct light turns on when instructed to do so. If any of the lights aren’t working, make sure to replace the bulb and re-test the car lights before you set off on your trip.”
Always test your battery
“With batteries, they’re often out of sight out of mind, but problems with them are actually one of the most common causes of breakdowns. Before a long trip, there’s a few essential checks you can do to make sure you’re as prepared as possible.”
“Look any signs of corrosion around the terminals then make sure all the connections are tight. Another sign your battery could be failing is your engine taking longer than usual to turnover, or the lights on your dashboard appearing dimmer than normal.”
“Testing your battery early can prevent the inconvenience of a car that won't start after a service station break, when you’re away from home. It’s also a good idea to pack jump leads for if you’re in a pinch.”
Ensure visibility
“While it won’t prevent you from breaking down: cleaning your car isn’t just about appearance, it’s an important maintenance step.”
“Before you set off, make sure to check and top up your screen wash, to ensure clear visibility on the road. Running out on the motorway has the potential to become dangerous very quickly. Windows and wing mirrors can rapidly collect dirt and debris, so giving your car a quick exterior clean will also help make sure everything is clear before you set off.”
“You can actually be fined up to £1,000 for having an illegible number plate because of dirt, so if you don’t have time to clean the whole vehicle – make sure to give that a wipe with some glass cleaner to avoid any extra costs.”
LKQ Euro Car Parts further commented: “While breakdowns can become funny anecdotes, they can also be dangerous, particularly on busy roads or long trips. Many breakdowns are caused by issues that could have been spotted in advance, and taking a few minutes to check your vehicle before setting off can make a real difference.”
