Kumho Tyre’s Emissions Reduction Targets Approved by SBTi

Kumho Tyre announced that it has received official approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets for 2030 and its long-term net-zero goal for 2045

Kumho Tyre announced that it has received official approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets for 2030 and its long-term net-zero goal for 2045. The company has committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% and Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030 from the 2022 baseline.

The SBTi is a global initiative jointly established by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It scientifically validates whether companies’ GHG reduction targets align with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C pathway.

In line with the SBTi standards, Kumho Tyre has committed to reducing its Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect, from purchased energy) emissions by 42%, and its Scope 3 (other indirect) emissions by 25% by 2030, compared to a 2022 baseline. By 2045, the company aims to achieve a 90% reduction in total GHG emissions across all three scopes, and to reach net-zero throughout its entire value chain.

To accelerate the implementation of its emissions reduction strategy, Kumho Tyreestablished the Global Carbon & Energy Management Committee in April 2025, chaired by the Executive Vice President of Production Technology. The committee monitors regulatory and industry trends on GHG emissions, oversees the management of performance and progress on reduction targets for each manufacturing site, and develops plans to expand renewable energy use.

Currently, Kumho Tyre operates solar power generation systems at its seven global manufacturing sites, transitioning 11% of its total electricity consumption to renewable energy. Notably, the Tianjin plant in China achieved a 50% renewable energy usage rate in 2024 and is evaluating additional procurement methods, such as direct Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). Five plants, including Tianjin, have obtained ISO 50001 Energy Management System certification, enhancing energy efficiency at manufacturing sites and integrated carbon reduction management systems.

Kumho Tyre recently received a ‘B’ rating in the CDP Climate Change Assessment and was included in the CDP Supplier Engagement Rating (SER) A List for its outstanding management of ESG risks and climate-related initiatives across the supply chain.
