MOT testers at risk of being suspended if they fail to carry out their training and assessment

Ahead of the deadline for MOT Annual Assessments and CPD on 31st of March, the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is supporting test centres to avoid the risk of them having MOT testers suspended. This follows the DVSA’s confirmation that, “if you’re not able to complete your training and assessment on time… you will lose your ability to test.”

Failing to complete an MOT Annual Assessment in time results in the individual having their tester status suspended. If this happens, they can no longer carry out MOTs, which can have a significant impact on business and profits. To get their status reinstated, the individual must complete the next year’s assessment, record 3 hours of annual training, book and deliver a demonstration test with the DVSA and submit a new DBS check. This not only costs money and time for the test centre, but also puts them at risk from losing customers who may well turn to the competition and remain loyal to the new garage in the future.

Recognising the time required to complete the annual assessment, for 2025-26 the IMI has streamlined the process to provide hassle-free training. The innovative new IMI eLearning platform simulates real-world vehicle inspections, offering immersive learning that utilises narration rather than text to deliver a more intuitive and easier to use experience.
