Simple filter change could save drivers money in wasted fuel

Missing a simple maintenance task means UK drivers could be wasting unnecessary fuel costs

Missing a simple maintenance task means UK drivers could be wasting unnecessary fuel costs, and breathing in more bacteria, pollutants and pollen than they need to – all due to their car’s filter.

Car experts at LKQ Euro Car Parts are urging motorists to regularly replace both their cabin and engine air filters. Clogged filters can impact everything from fuel efficiency and engine performance to air quality inside the car.

Cabin Filters

The purpose of cabin filters is to trap pollen, dust and airborne pollutants before they enter the car (through the heating and air conditioning system). When they’re blocked, the airflow is reduced and allergens can circulate freely, which could mean you're more susceptible to nasty winter colds.

Do your car windows steam up easily? It could be a sign that your cabin air filter needs changing. Old filters restrict the airflow, preventing your HVAC system from effectively removing moisture and dehumidifying the cabin air.

Air Filters

Engine air filters, meanwhile, are essential for maintaining the correct air–fuel ratio. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the engine to work harder and, in turn, burn more fuel, potentially costing drivers' extra money.

Other common symptoms of a clogged air filter include engine misfires and reduced acceleration, which can cause issues for road users.

An expert at LKQ Euro Car Parts comments: “Regular filter changes are essential to ensure that your vehicle is performing at an optimal level. Maintained filters can help cars to run more efficiently and improve comfort for both passengers and drivers, as well as saving road users hundreds of pounds each year in unnecessary fuel costs.”
