Spencer Monk from Sidcup, who works from the Crayford service centre is officially Auto Windscreens’ ‘Best Technician’ in the UK. He competed against colleagues from across the country in the company’s annual ‘Clearly the Best’ final yesterday (Tuesday 2 September) at Auto Windscreens’ training centre and headquarters in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Having made it through regional heats, Spencer, who works from the service centre in Acorn Industrial Park in Crayford, scored the most points, undertaking a glass repair, a windscreen and rear door glass replacement, a vehicle safety systems (ADAS) static calibration and a rubber removal and refit on a convertible car from the 90s. The finalists were the first to use a newly-released glass cutting tool, the ‘Hawk’ from Panther Pro, which the company is due to launch into the network. They were also evaluated on customer service skills, health and safety and the Environmental, Social and Governance aspects of their role.

Spencer lifted the coveted ‘BE57 TEC’ numberplate for his van and was presented with a cheque for £3,000 at an evening ceremony at Chesterfield FC. The other finalists were Craig Foy from the Stoke-on Trent service centre, Peter Holton from Swansea and Richard Barber from Croydon.

Spencer said: It’s a great achievement for me to be the winner of Clearly the Best. It’s the third time I’ve entered, so it’s third time lucky! It’s been a long time coming and I hope to take on the challenge again next year, so perhaps there will be more wins to come!”

Sean Draycott, Operations Director at Auto Windscreens, said: “Our technicians have a challenging role, and one that’s changing all the time due to advancements in glass and in vehicle safety technology. We hold this competition every year because we’re so proud of all our technicians’ training and skills and how they look after our customers. The finalists this year have a combined 88 years’ experience between them, and it was quite a contest. Our winner and our finalists epitomise all that’s ‘Clearly the Best’ about our company and our industry, and I’d like to congratulate them all on their achievements!”
