Essential car maintenance job drivers need to do in Spring

Spring is here, which means UK drivers could be breathing in more bacteria, pollutants and pollen than they need to;  all due to their car’s cabin filter.

Car experts at  LKQ Euro Car Parts are urging motorists to replace their cabin filters to improve air quality inside the car before spring arrives and causes hay fever flare ups.

Cabin Filters

The purpose of cabin filters is to trap pollen, dust and airborne pollutants before they enter the car (through the heating and air conditioning system). When they’re blocked, the airflow is reduced and allergens can circulate freely, which could mean you're more susceptible to colds.

Or if your car windows are steaming up easily, it could be a sign that your cabin air filter needs changing. Old filters restrict the airflow, preventing your HVAC system from effectively removing moisture and dehumidifying the cabin air.

An expert at LKQ Euro Car Parts comments: “Regular filter changes are essential to ensure that your vehicle is performing at an optimal level.

Maintained filters can help cars to run more efficiently and improve comfort for both passengers and drivers.

“Driving with strong hay fever symptoms can impose a risk to drivers and other people on the roads. Frequent sneezing and itchy eyes can distract you and take focus from the roads, which could result in an accident, whilst antihistamines can sometimes cause drowsiness.

“Ahead of hay fever season, drivers should check whether their pollen filter needs replacing. The pollen filter cleans the air that circulates through the car, removing airborne irritants that can lead to sneezing and itchy eyes. You can easily replace the pollen filter by locating it (they are usually found behind the glovebox), detaching the existing filter and fitting a new filter that matches.”
