UK Garage & Bodyshop Event welcomes ‘Mini Boys’ viral stars to inspire next generation of technicians

The UK Garage & Bodyshop Event has announced that a remarkable father-and-son team behind a viral Mini restoration project will be appearing

The UK Garage & Bodyshop Event has announced that a remarkable father-and-son team behind a viral Mini restoration project will be appearing at this year’s show, bringing their story of hands-on learning, family connection and automotive passion to the NEC, Birmingham, on 3rd and 4th June 2026.

Twelve-year-old Ben, from Biddulph in Staffordshire, has captured national attention after taking on the challenge of rebuilding his very first car, a classic Mini, with his dad, Gary, who set him the ambitious task when he was just 10 years old. The goal? To complete the project in time for Ben’s 16th birthday, so he can drive it to his school prom.

The idea came from Gary’s desire to encourage his son away from screens and into the real world, developing practical skills and confidence along the way. What started as a challenge has since grown into a powerful story of learning, patience and shared passion, with the pair documenting their journey online and inspiring thousands of followers.

Speaking about the experience, Ben said: “I’ve learnt welding, grinding, how to strip my first ever engine, replacing panels, and it’s all thanks to my dad. I’m just lucky.”

Gary added: “All the kids these days are computer-based. There’s very few with practical skills now. This has brought us together; I’ve had to learn patience and Ben’s had to learn the skills.”

Visitors to the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event will have the opportunity to meet Ben and Gary, hear about their journey first-hand and see how their project has developed. Their story is expected to resonate across the industry, particularly at a time when attracting new talent and encouraging practical skills is a key focus for the automotive aftermarket.

Joanne Knowles, Event Director at Messe Frankfurt, organisers of the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event, said: “Ben and Gary’s story is incredibly inspiring and highlights exactly why it’s so important to engage the next generation with hands-on skills. Their journey shows what can be achieved with the right support, encouragement and passion, and we’re delighted to welcome them to this year’s event.”

Their appearance will complement the event’s wider focus on skills and career development, including the Ignite Arena, which returns with an enhanced interactive format designed to connect students, educators and employers, and showcase the breadth of opportunities across the automotive aftermarket.
