ISO 14068-1 Set to Replace PAS 2060 What this means for businesses
The transition to New Global Carbon Neutrality Standard Presents Opportunities for Forward-Thinking Garages
A significant shift is underway in carbon neutral certification as PAS 2060, gives way to the more comprehensive ISO 14068-1 standard. According to BSI (British Standards Institution), "from 1st January 2025, BSI will only provide carbon neutrality verification to ISO 14068-1 as the new standard," establishing a consistent international framework for carbon neutrality certification.
"ISO 14068-1 really is the gold standard in carbon neutrality," explains Paul Robinson, Managing Director of CBAM-UK Ltd, a forward-thinking organisation in this space. "It creates a globally recognised approach that builds upon what PAS 2060 established and creates a more complete compliance standard."
Collaboration Simplifies Compliance for Auto Repair Businesses
Motornomic, an innovative startup founded by a team of industry veterans with over 11 years of experience growing repair and SMR garages, is launching a streamlined solution to help repair businesses navigate this transition effectively.
"We know of numerous examples where taking sustainability seriously can make a significant difference in the ability to secure fleet and insurance contracts," says Leigh Tymms, co-founder of Motornomic. "However, we recognise that certification can initially feel like unfamiliar territory and can represent an investment of both time and capital. That's why, in collaboration with CBAM-UK Ltd, we've developed a solution specifically designed to assist garages with ISO 14068-1 certification or any related carbon neutrality standards."
The approach combines rigorous standards with operational efficiency to independent third party verification and carbon offsetting — in an approach tailored to the automotive repair industry.
Beyond Certification: A Comprehensive Business Solution
The Motornomic team and CBAM-UK Ltd are proudly already supporting their first regional garages through the newly released PAS 2060 conversion and full ISO 14068-1 verifications and have just opened access to all garages nationwide. Still, the team have bigger ambitions in assisting the industry and are in the process of building a more sustainable network of UK garages. Helping to better align the UK automotive repair businesses with the ESG targets of many corporates who hold sway within our sector.
To take this further, a fully digitised version of "Carbon Credentials" solution is in development and just one component of Motornomic's comprehensive modules designed to help garages reduce operational costs and develop new revenue streams. Through a low-cost monthly subscription, the platform aims to empower independent repair businesses.
"Everyone wants a to boost sustainability, but we must be realistic that return on investment is what ultimately drives business decisions to pursue these standards," Leigh explains. "Our approach is built around giving more control back to garages, while improving both operational efficiency and financial returns."
