Judges reveal what makes a standout award entry
Independent garages across the UK and Ireland are being encouraged to enter the Blend Awards 2025, as judges lift the lid on what it takes to impress and why the recognition can be a powerful business tool.
In the latest episode of The Blend Podcast, judges Hayley Pells, Policy and Public Affairs Lead at the Institute of the Motor Industry, Andy Crook of Atomic Success, and podcast host Mike Ruff discuss how the Blend Awards are helping garages celebrate success, boost team morale and identify areas for growth.
“This isn’t just about handing out trophies, it’s about taking a moment to reflect, share progress, and learn from others,” said Mike. “It’s a rare opportunity for garages to step back from the day-to-day and recognise the hard work and growth happening within their teams.”
Open to all independent garages, not just Garage Hive users, the Blend Awards include categories such as Garage of the Year and Staff Recognition. Submissions are anonymised before judging to remove bias, with entries assessed on how directly they answer each question, stay within the word count, and provide relevant examples.
“Think of the application as a mini business review,” said Andy. “Be clear, specific, and show us what makes your garage exceptional. It’s a chance to tell your story and it can have a real impact, both internally and externally.”
As well as recognising excellence, the awards offer valuable marketing opportunities. The episode explores how shortlisted and winning garages can leverage their achievements through local media, social channels, and customer communications – turning recognition into reputation.
"For me, my experience of entering awards, it's all about showcasing your team,” said Hayley. “It’s a way of showing leadership and of saying, ‘I believe in my team, I’m proud of what we’ve built, and I think they deserve to be recognised.’ It’s not just about winning. It’s about standing up and backing your people.”
